'Sensational' Liverpool star says he idolised Arsenal's Thierry Henry as a youngster
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has revealed that he idolised Arsenal legend Thierry Henry when he was a youngster.
The 24-year-old Reds ace said the Gunners icon was the “sweet spot” in terms of iconic top-flight players when he was growing up.
Premier League Uncut tasked Gomez with choosing his top five Premier League players – past and present – in every position, plus a wildcard.
The Liverpool ace gave the Arsenal legend a special mention, putting him on par with Reds star Mohamed Salah.
When pushed, Gomez undertandably went with Salah, jokingly pointing out he has to share a dressing room with him.
“When I was young, at my age, the sweet spot at that point in time was Thierry Henry,” said the Anfield man.
“The charisma that he played with, the swag, his whole aura.”
Gomez also joked that he “couldn’t” copy Henry’s habit of pulling up his socks over his knees.
“There’s certain people that can pull it off and certain people can’t,” said the “sensational” defender.
Moving on to Salah, Gomez said: “In the present, I think things that Mo is doing, we’ll look back and be like, ‘that’s unbelievable’.
“I feel sometimes things aren’t appreciated until they’re gone. I don’t know, I’d probably have to tie those two.”
He wasn’t allowed to do so, however, so he went for Salah.
“I have to sit next to him in the dressing room after this,” he joked.
Henry was truly unstoppable in his Arsenal days, registering a staggering 228 goals and 106 assists in red and white.
Salah is likely to be remembered in a similar fashion – 149 goals and 56 assists from 232 appearances, and counting.
