Sean Gregan comments on Leeds United’s ‘collywobbles’ as Preston close in

Former Leeds United player Sean Gregan has been discussing the club’s current struggles to stay clear of the chasing pack, whilst clearly rooting for another of his former clubs.

Gregan spent two full seasons at Elland Road, playing 74 games, after joining from West Brom in a £1 million (The Guardian) deal back in 2004. After two seasons in the Championship playing under Kevin Blackwell’s tutelage, he left, joining Oldham Athletic.

But it is with Preston North End where Gregan is perhaps best known for playing his football. The defender/midfielder played over 250 games for the Lancashire side, becoming a hero in the process.

This season, Preston are in the battle for Premier League promotion. Alex Neil’s side sit sixth in the table and are just three points behind Leeds United in second.

That gap has shrunk recently because of Leeds’ dramatic dip in form. When the two teams met in December, Leeds were nine points clear of the Deepdale side and eight points clear in the second automatic promotion spot.

Gregan, writing for the Lancashire Evening Post, is clearly hopeful that Preston, out of his two former teams, can catch Leeds in the promotion race.

“They (Preston) are right in there in terms of automatic promotion. West Bromwich Albion have pulled away at the top and I would expect them to go and seal one of those top-two spots.

“But we have said that before, when West Brom and Leeds United pulled 10 points clear than everybody else.

“Leeds had a decent result in midweek drawing at Brentford – another team in the promotion race – but they are experiencing another case of the collywobbles. They are now in second spot in (the) table by virtue of having a better goal difference…

“North End are in sixth and have an (sic) put themselves in with a great chance of finally achieving the Holy Grail and getting that place in the Premier League.”

TBR’s View

Leeds United’s promotion bid has certainly hit the skids in recent weeks and fans will be hoping the Whites can get back on track against another promotion hopeful in Bristol City tomorrow.

Preston, meanwhile, are taking on Millwall, one of the teams on the fringe of the play-off battle.

Both games are tough home fixtures but by the end of the day, Preston could be level on points with Leeds United and thoroughly in the shake-up for the automatic promotion places.
