'Screaming': Jamie Carragher spotted Conte going mad at 26-year-old Tottenham player on Sunday
Jamie Carragher has been speaking on Sky Sports and says he spotted Antonio Conte going mad at Tottenham Hotspur defender Davinson Sanchez on Sunday.
Spurs fell to a disappointing defeat on Sunday as Newcastle United ran out 2-1 winners in north London. Conte’s men have now lost consecutive Premier League games after a promising start to the season.
The Italian was without two key players on Sunday, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Cristian Romero sidelined. Sanchez stepped into the Tottenham back-three and the 26-year-old put in a relatively solid display, despite his obvious weaknesses on the ball.
But Conte was clearly unhappy with the Colombian defender’s efforts to press Eddie Howe’s side.
Carragher spotted Conte going mad at Sanchez
Carragher spoke on Monday Night Football and highlighted a moment where Conte was going mad at Sanchez on Sunday.
“Conte was screaming at Sanchez to go and press, but he doesn’t know who he’s pressing,” Carragher said.
“He doesn’t know what he’s doing because it was so good to watch Newcastle play in between them.
“Sanchez comes flying out because the manager has told him to, but there is no panic [from Newcastle], and Sanchez finds himself in midfield and they kept switching the ball and forcing the back five [out].”
Sanchez has proven to be a decent back-up option for Conte over the past year but there is a noticeable drop-off in quality when Romero is unavailable.
The Argentine defender is brilliant at pressuring opposition players and Spurs missed his aggressive style of play on Sunday.
Conte clearly wanted Sanchez to adopt a similar approach but it seems he was unsure about which player he should be pressing.
