Scout says he found a ‘generational talent’ for Tottenham and he cost just £8m

Tottenham have found several standout bargains over the years.

The £5m signing of Gareth Bale from Southampton in 2007 turned out to be a masterstroke – resulting in an £86m move to Real Madrid – while the £16.5m arrival of Luka Modric from Dinamo Zagreb in 2008 was also a smart move.

Now, Rob Mackenzie – Head of Scouting at Tottenham – believes he has already found another superstar in the making in Lucas Bergvall.

Rob Mackenzie claims Lucas Bergvall is a “genuine generational talent”

Speaking on the Training Ground Guru Podcast, the 40-year-old discussed how he feels about the Sweden international after managing to sign him from Djurgarden for £8m ahead of Barcelona.

Mackenzie said: “We were able to convince him to join us ahead of Barcelona, which was a fantastic coup for the club. I think maybe the opportunities to sign these guys in the windows is getting smaller and smaller, and you have to be able to react (with) less information faster.

“I think in the case of Lucas Bergvall, he is a genuine generational talent and a fantastic human being. You realise that as soon as you meet him that this is different. Here is a kid who has the humility of a 19-year-old at the time, but who looks you in the eyes and gives you the impression that this guy can hold his own.”

The teenager has already made 55 appearances for Tottenham – scoring two goals and providing seven assists – since his arrival in July 2024.

Tottenham tipped to explore further opportunities in Scandinavia

Bergvall – who Wayne Rooney has praised – is proof that Sweden is still doing something very right when it comes to developing talent, having churned out two top strikers in Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres as well.

Following the successful £8m deal for the Swede, Tottenham have been backed to look in Scandinavia for a potential multi-club model.

This part of the planet has also produced the likes of Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard in recent years too, so there is certainly value to be found.

Manchester City could also lay down roots in Scandinavia – where they recently plucked Sverre Nypan from – so it feels like top clubs across Europe are starting to become aware of just how fruitful this area can be.
