Despite ending up on the losing side last night, Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney received a glowing verdict from Scotland’s national media after his international display.
Tierney impressed during Scotland’s 2-2 home draw against Austria in a World Cup group stage qualifier.
Steve Clarke’s side came from behind twice to earn a point, with John McGinn scoring a late acrobatic bicycle kick to snatch the draw.
Scotland, who will face England during this summer’s European Championships, have a side filled with some top Premier league talents.
Arsenal left-back Tierney is one of the key players, albeit he plays as a centre-back in a back three for his country.
The 23-year-old left-footer has the versatility to play as a centre-half effectively for his country, with Liverpool’s Andy Robertson operating as a wing-back.
Scottish media outlet Daily Record gave the Gunners star 8/10 in their player ratings despite conceding two goals last night, and states he was one of the best attacking threats, even in his centre-back role.
“Slotted in at the left centre-back role but was given licence to break forward in support of Robertson, which he did to great effect and at times was Scotland’s main attacking threat,” wrote the Daily Record.

TBR’s View:
Tierney, who is clearly one of the standout players for Scotland, is similarly pivotal at the Emirates Stadium.
He’s an aggressive and intelligent defender that has the traits to succeed at centre-back, but you do miss a lot of his attacking ability when he’s not flying forward from full-back.
When you look at the team Mikel Arteta is trying to build at Arsenal, Tierney has to be at the heart of it.
