Chelsea academy graduate Mason Mount has saved his club £70million, according to Paul Merson.

The 22-year-old has come through the ranks at Stamford Bridge to become one of England’s top midfielders.

Mount joined the Chelsea academy aged six and has progressed to the very top of the game.

He has clocked up 112 competitive appearances for Chelsea, plus 24 England caps.

In addition, Mount has won the Champions League and UEFA Supercup with the Blues, as well as playing in the Euro 2020 final with England.

The future is incredibly bright for Mount and Chelsea, who look like bona fide Premier League title challengers this year.

Spurs “a million miles away” from Chelsea – Merson

Merson, writing in the Daily Star, juxtaposed the incredible Blues squad to that of Spurs, their next opponents.

“You look at the subs Chelsea had against Aston Villa the other week,” wrote Merson.

“Cesar Azpilicueta, Jorginho, Timo Werner, Mason Mount, Ben Chilwell.

“They would all get in the Spurs team. N’Golo Kante and Christian Pulisic weren’t even in the Chelsea squad.

“If you were Tottenham you would take every single one of those players.

“They are a million miles away from competing with Chelsea for trophies this season.

“Chelsea have had a good crop come through – Mason Mount, Reece James, Callum Hudson-Odoi.

“When you have players like that coming through it helps.

“Mason Mount has saved Chelsea £70million. That’s how they can go out and spend their money on a Romelu Lukaku.”
