Aston Villa transfer target Ahmed Hegazi could be heading to Saudi Arabia, according to reports in the Arab nation.
As reported by the Express and Star this week, Hegazi is on a list of potential centre-back targets for Aston Villa this summer. Whilst the report stated that the Egyptian was not at the top if Dean Smith’s list, it appears the 28-year-old is a potential back-up option.
Hegazi was a key player for Aston Villa’s rivals West Brom last season and it appears he could be an alternative to number one option, Bristol City defender Adam Webster.
But, if reports in Saudi Arabia are believed to be true, then Aston Villa will not be getting Hegazi. Okaz, one of the biggest publications in the Kingdom, reports that Jeddah-based Al-Ahli are closing in on a deal for Hegazi.
They claim the club will announce the ‘details of the transfer’ ‘in the coming days’.
Al-Ahli would have no problem in the financial stakes convincing Hegazi into a deal. Convincing him on a sporting level could be more challenging.
West Brom fans will probably be more concerned about this then their rivals at Aston Villa. The Baggies could lose another regular first-teamer, following Jay Rodriguez and Craig Dawson’s recent departures.
Aston Villa fans were never really sold on the idea of Hegazi. It seems he was a last resort transfer option for the newly-promoted side.
