Sasa Kalajdzic interest suggests return to unpopular Leeds United transfer approach

In the summer, Leeds United clearly changed their approach to the transfer market. Victor Orta targeted players with proven Championship experience for Marcelo Bielsa. The likes of Patrick Bamford and Barry Douglas were brought in, along with loanees such as Lewis Baker, Izzy Brown and Jamal Blackman.

It was a big change from the policy a year previous, which saw some unknown quantities arrive at Leeds.

The likes of Mateusz Klich and Ezgjan Alioski arrived. Both have made Leeds their home this season. However, the likes of Jay-Roy Grot, Caleb Ekuban, Pierre-Michel Lasogga, Pawel Cibicki, and Felix Wiedwald failed to have the desired impact.

Which is what makes the Daily Mail’s report suggesting a move for Admira Wacker’s 6ft 5ins attacker Sasa Kalajdzic interesting.

That would certainly look like a return to the previous strategy. The young Austrian is in fine form, scoring six goals in 10 games since recovering from a broken foot.

But he has limited experience, even in the Austrian league, so would represent a big gamble from Leeds. Considering the report also mentions Crystal Palace and Red Bull Salzburg as keen, he’s unlikely to be cheap.

Leeds should stick to the current method if they remain in the Championship. If promoted, the focus should shift to those with experience in the top-flight. The gamble on young European talent is simply too much of a lottery.
