Santiago Arias comments suggest Everton transfer is not currently on

Everton have been linked with the transfer of the Colombian full-back.

Everton have recently been linked with the potential transfer of Santiago Arias of Atletico Madrid. However, judging by two recent interviews from the Colombian, a deal looks to be unlikely.

As reported by the Liverpool Echo the Toffees have looked into a potential deal for the Colombian defender, who is valued at around £11 million.

Everton sporting director Marcel Brands signed Arias from Sporting Lisbon during his time at PSV Eindhoven. Now it seems he wants a reunion at Goodison Park.

But as for contact between the two this summer, Arias is adamant there has been none. As he told Algemeen Dagblad, there has been no contact between him and Brands this summer. He also reiterated his commitment to Los Colchoneros.

“I didn’t talk to Brands.

“I am focused on the Copa América with my country. We will see what the future holds. I still have a contract with Atlético, so my future is there right now.”

That is not the only interview Arias has conducted this week. Speaking from Brazil, where he is featuring for Colombia in the Copa America, he told MARCA he is hopeful of more football at the Wanda Metropolitano next season.

“It’s an honour to have played 33 matches this season with Atletico Madrid in Spain. Obviously I want to play more, but we will go step by step. I want to play here in Copa America and give what I can…

“…Later we will see what will happen with Atletico Madrid. Now I have a contract with Atletico and I have to wait to see what the club says.”

Arias, on paper, looks a great signing for Everton. Affordable, known to Brands and in a position where Everton need cover. Seamus Coleman has struggled with injury in recent times whilst Jonjoe Kenny is now on loan at Schalke 04.

But judging by these two interviews, Arias is not currently thinking of a move to Merseyside.
