Luke Ayling has posted on Instagram, admitting he is missing football on a weekend where Leeds United could have secured promotion to the Premier League – and a reported Whites summer target and Sanchez Watt responded.

Ayling, 28, was in stunning form for Leeds, scoring three goals in his last five games for Leeds including a wonderful volley for the Whites in a 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town last time out.

Leeds remain at the top of the Championship table, with only nine league games to play this season. The Whites, under Marcelo Bielsa, have been in excellent form – winning five consecutive matches and keeping five clean sheets in a row.

It has been almost two months since Ayling and Leeds last played, with the win over Huddersfield coming on March 7. The right-back posted on Instagram, stating he misses pulling on the whites jersey to playing for the Yorkshire club.

Ayling joined Leeds almost four years ago and has since clocked up 145 appearances for the Whites. His role as vice-captain, and an important member on and off the field – backed up by the Amazon documentary – has seen him become a fan favourite.

Ayling’s ex-Arsenal teammate Watt – who also played 32 times for Leeds – claimed Ayling is a Leeds legend. Meanwhile, Sheffield United star Luke Freeman (Sun on Sunday, January 5, page 61) was linked with Leeds in January, and said Ayling should be in the team of the year.
