Leeds United will have to compete in the Championship play-offs. Today’s controversial 1-1 draw with Aston Villa confirmed the expected after Sheffield United’s win over Ipswich Town yesterday.

But as Leeds’ fate was confirmed, events in Spain will have fans wondering if the club made the right call with one of their players.

Getafe might have lost to Real Sociedad, but Samuel Saiz scored a wonderful consolation for the Madrid-based club.

The mercurial attacker controlled the ball at the far-post, before bending a superb strike beyond the Sociedad keeper. The result was poor for Getafe, but luckily their nearest rivals also suffered meaning they remain in their unlikely Champions League spot in La Liga.

Seeing Saiz break his goal duck for his new club will undoubtedly have Leeds fans questioning the decision to allow him his loan move in January, especially considering the Whites’ recent struggles in the Championship.

It was reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post at the time of the transfer that he was allowed to return to Spain for personal reasons. That said, he was struggling to have the same impact he had under Thomas Christiansen with Marcelo Bielsa in charge. The report claimed a potential permanent fee was included in the deal, somewhere in the region of £6 million.

But as he fights for Champions League football, Leeds will now contend with the play-offs. Considering their recent struggles, the plucky Spaniard would undoubtedly have been a useful asset for what lies ahead.
