Sam Allardyce says West Brom can’t afford to keep Diagne and Yokuslu

West Brom manager, Sam Allardyce, has ruled out any chance of the Baggies being able to sign either Mbaye Diagne or Okay Yokuslu this summer.

Both players arrived in January and gave Albion a much-needed boost in terms of quality and squad depth.

However, the Baggies have been relegated regardless and like Sheffield United and Fulham, will face cost-cutting exercises in order to ensure the club remains stable for the foreseeable future.

And as part of that cost-cutting, Albion manager Allardyce has said that there is now no chance of keeping the likes of Diagne and Yokuslu.

“The reason Okay and Mbaye came here is to show they can play in the Premier League. Why else would you come? Why would you leave Galatasaray as leading goalscorer, or a side that isn’t struggling against relegation in Spain,” Allardyce told the Express and Star.

“Why would you come to the Premier League, other than to make an impression, to say here I am, look at me. Come and get me. That would hopefully have been us had we stayed up. But now we couldn’t afford them. We have to go to Championship wages now so those players are very difficult to afford.”

Okuslu has been the standout player of the two overall. The midfielder has shown touches of quality as well as fight in the middle of the park, and it would be no surprise to see someone come in for him.

Diagne, meanwhile, didn’t quite hit the heights some expected but he still managed three goals.

What’s clear here is that West Brom took a bit of a gamble in January and were paying both Diagne and Yokuslu a nice sum of money.

But with relegation comes responsibility, and Allardyce is right in that they’ll be out of range now. Both would have taken the Championship by storm but it just won’t happen.

Ultimately, West Brom will just need to move on and find other options.
