Sam Allardyce explains why ‘passionate’ Seamus Coleman would have been his Everton captain

Sam Allardyce is fairly unpopular with the Everton fanbase after his stint managing the club. Not only that, but the way he has consistently moaned and whined about his sacking since getting the shove at the end of last season has also irked Everton fans.

But he is clearly still very fond of some of his former players at Goodison Park. Speaking to TalkSPORT earlier today (05/02/2018; 09:51) he revealed the best XI he has ever managed. Jordan Pickford was in goal, whilst Seamus Coleman was at right-back.

He went on to highlight just why the Irishman was in and why he would have been made captain by Big Sam should he have remained at Goodison Park.

“We managed to get him fit as quick as possible when I was there and get him back to the level.

“This (selection) wasn’t just him as a footballer, this was just him selected as a person.

“An outstanding guy who is so committed and passionate about Everton Football Club. He was a captain for me and if I had been there this season he would have been the captain of Everton Football Club.”

This perhaps goes to show just how little Allardyce has actually paid attention to Everton since his departure. Whilst he likes to moan about the way he lost his job he clearly doesn’t follow the action on the pitch particularly carefully.

Mainly, because Coleman has been the Everton captain for most of the season. In fact, apart from four occasions, he has been Everton captain every time he has started for the club in the league this term.

Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka and Tom Davies are the other three to have started an Everton game with the armband this season.

Coleman’s performances have, perhaps, not warranted the armband. No Everton fan would ever question the heart of their Irish warrior. But he seems to have lost a yard after his recent injury troubles and has been in poor form for the last few months.

When it comes to captaining Everton, he needs to lead more by example, or else the likes of Davies or Baines might warrant the armband more.
