Salomon Rondon continues to show why Newcastle should have broken their transfer record last summer

For the majority of the summer transfer window, Newcastle United were searching for a new striker to bolster their attack.

Salomon Rondon was identified as a top target and he was keen to return to the Premier League after being relegated with West Bromwich Albion.

But the Baggies refused to sell the Venezuela international for less than his release clause.

The Telegraph reported that Rondon had a £16.5m relegation release clause in his deal but Newcastle were reluctant to meet that.

Mike Ashley has been notorious for his lack of investment and this deal would have broken their club record transfer fee.

But instead, Rafa Benitez had to settle for a loan swap, bringing in Rondon in exchange for Dwight Gayle.

And the 29-year-old has been in inspired form this season, scoring seven goals, including six in the league.

On Tuesday night, the physical centre-forward scored the equaliser for Newcastle as they went on to shock Manchester City.

Rondon is quickly establishing himself as a fan favourite at Newcastle for his commitment, desire, passion, goals and all-round strong performances.

He continues to prove why Newcastle should have taken a permanent punt on him. And if he keeps up his form, they might just make his deal permanent next summer.
