Ryan Sessegnon needs to hit ground running at Tottenham

Ryan Sessegnon is yet to play a competitive minute of football for Tottenham, but it looks like he will feel the pressure immediately when he returns from injury.

The 19-year-old arrived as an exciting talent from Fulham in the summer and has unfortunately seen his start to the new campaign disrupted through injury.

He’s had to watch Spurs make a mixed start, with the real low coming in the 7-2 defeat to Bayern Munich and the 3-0 loss to Brighton last week.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have some real soul-searching to do during the international break and there has to be a response to some horrific performances.

According to the Times, there are five first-team players that will be made available to exit in the January transfer window.

It is understood that Eric Dier, Christian Eriksen, Serge Aurier, Victor Wanyama and Danny Rose will be allowed to leave.

Sessegnon should be particularly interested if teammate Rose departs, as he will leave a sizeable gap at full-back that he could try fill.

Ben Davies would be the main senior option at left-back if Rose does leave, but the former is no more than a steady defender and hardly a world-beater that improves the team.

Sessegnon is a left-sided flyer that will surely get a chance to stake his claim in the new team as one of the new faces and slotting him as a fresh option at left-back would make sense.

The English teenager has played as both a winger and a full-back in his career so far, but will need to sharpen up defensively to play for a major team in England.

But he is a £25million (BBC) signing with a lot of potential that is mature beyond his years and is perhaps some of the fresh blood needed the Spurs XI.

It would not be ideal to put pressure on him as a youngster in a struggling team, but Pochettino may not have much of a choice.

Spurs confirmed (official website) that Sessegnon was in the “late stages” of rehab from a hamstring injury, so it doesn’t look like long before he can make his debut for the club and he will walk into a high pressure scenario.
