Ryan Mason praises VAR for Eddie Nketiah red card decision

Eddie Nketiah’s sending off for Arsenal yesterday evening caused quite a debate.

The Gunners substitute was sent packing after a VAR review on his high-foot challenge on James Justin.

Referee Chris Kavanagh was advised to go and watch the incident himself and subsequently decided Nketiah’s tackle was worthy of a red card.

But plenty disagreed with the decision. Chris Sutton, Gary Lineker, and Cesc Fabregas all seemed to suggest that Nketiah was harshly treated.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was also disappointed with the decision.

One former Tottenham Hotspur star was having none of it.

Ryan Mason, who played 70 times for Tottenham, made it clear on Twitter his belief that this was the perfect use of VAR to make the right decision.

Mason, who is now a coach at Spurs following his retirement from the game due to a skull fracture in 2018, clearly feels that the right decision was made, and based on the evidence on show it is hard to disagree.

Nobody would suggest that Nketiah went with any malice into the challenge, but his clumsiness undoubtedly endangered the safety of another player.

Whilst some Arsenal fans might think Mason, as a Tottenham diehard, is being tribal, that would seem harsh in this instance.
