Ruud Gullit has got Everton fans excited by appearing to suggest that Carlo Ancelotti could be on his way to the club.

The Italian, who has won the Champions League three times as a manager, was sacked by Napoli yesterday evening after weeks of discontent at the Serie A club.

Now, as reported by The Telegraph, Everton are ready to make a move for the former Chelsea manager, who won the Premier League during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal, however, are also on the hunt after recently sacking Everton managerial candidate Unai Emery.

But Gullit seemed dismissive of Arsenal as a destination on beIN SPORTS yesterday, instead suggesting Ancelotti might be about to become the new Everton boss.

“But also (we knew he was leaving) because a few sources said Everton.

“Yes (he’s got a task at Everton). If this is going to happen? I never thought he would do it. I really hope the best because it’s also a club that needs a lot of attention. New stadium, also.”

Of course, a pinch of salt here, this is still far from any sort of confirmation.

However, Gullit is an old friend of Ancelotti’s. The pair played together in a highly successful AC Milan midfield back in the late 80s and early 90s.

So he might know something others do not and Everton fans will hope that is the fact Ancelotti wants to head to Merseyside for his next project.
