Ruud Gullit says one Manchester City player is in the same category as Lionel Messi
Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has been praised by BBC Sport pundit Ruud Gullit, who has compared the Etihad Stadium star to Lionel Messi.
The 20-year-old has enjoyed a sensational season for the Citizens, registering 15 goals and 10 assists from 48 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Foden has been increasingly influential in recent weeks, standing out in the big Champions League tie victories over Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain.
Voting for the Professional Footballers’ Association men’s player of the year award for 2020-21 is under way and a number of BBC Sport pundits made their choices.
While Foden’s colleague Ruben Dias is the runaway winner of that particular poll, Foden was named by two pundits, one of which was Gullit.
“In the past only the big, strong, quick players were the ones always selected by the English teams but now I think smaller, agile and more technical players are trusted more,” said the Dutch legend.
“City have given Foden his chance and he has shown he is unbelievable, that he is in the same category as Lionel Messi.
“He is not exactly like Messi as a player – no-one is – but with his stature, his height, his quickness – he is the same. He is a wonderful player and I’ve loved watching him.”
Foden showed flashes of brilliance last year and you just knew he was a star in the making.
And this season, he’s improved massively, and at just 20 years of age, he’s already looking very much in the same bracket of future superstars as Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho and Kylian Mbappe.
