Russell Martin has told Sky Sports’ The Football Show on Wednesday (10.35am) that he should have been more selfish during his time at Rangers, suggesting he came back from injury too quickly.

Martin, 34, joined Rangers on loan during the second half of the 2017-18 season in which Graeme Murty took interim charge before Steven Gerrard joined the club. His 17-game spell is largely considered a failure.

The 29-time Scotland international, who is now a manager of third-tier English side MK Dons, winning only nine of his 17 matches. In his two performances against Celtic, Martin failed to prevent the Hoops winning 4-0 and 5-0.

Speaking to Graeme Souness and Jamie Carragher on Wednesday, Martin was full of praise for Rangers and is delighted to see the club going in the right direction – and wished had been more selfish, taking more time out to recover from injury.

“Incredible experience, incredible club but really difficult time to go,” Martin said. “I learnt a hell of a lot and I took so much from the experience. I really wish it had gone better.

“I came back too quickly from my injury and I should have been more selfish. But they’re are some good people up there and they are taking the club back to where it should be. Hell of a club.”
Rangers eventually finished nine points behind Celtic on 73 points, despite returning from the winter break in top form and winning six of Martin’s first seven appearances. However, the 3-2 defeat to Celtic, which Martin missed, was a turning point.

Rangers are still yet to win any silverware since returning to the top flight, with Celtic currently 13 points ahead of Rangers. It remains to be seen if the Scottish Premiership will cease to continue, and if it will be null and voided.
