Manchester United have beaten Newcastle to the signing of Benjamin Sesko.
The Slovenia international striker had been a target for several clubs in the Premier League, but it came down to the Red Devils and the Magpies in this window.
Newcastle pushed hard to land Sesko and even offered higher transfer fees and wages, but the RB Leipzig striker made it clear that he only wanted Manchester United.
Sesko will be unveiled at Old Trafford during Manchester United’s friendly against Fiorentina on Saturday.
Newcastle, on the other hand, continue their search for a new number nine, and we think they should look at a striker that Ruben Amorim wanted.
Ruben Amorim initially wanted Ollie Watkins instead of Benjamin Sesko – Newcastle should sign him now
Benjamin Sesko is an excellent signing for Manchester United.
The Slovene is a striker with tremendous ability, and the fact that he is still only 22 means he will become even better in the coming years.
Amorim will be delighted with the signing of Sesko, but the Portuguese tactician preferred someone else for that role in his side.
GiveMeSport claimed in July that Amorim deemed Ollie Watkins to be a ‘better solution’ than Sesko for Manchester United’s attacking issues.
We absolutely agreed with that opinion at the time, and we now think Newcastle should go all out for Watkins after missing out on Sesko to the Red Devils.
The Aston Villa star is a proven commodity in the Premier League, and he will be able to hit the ground running in Howe’s system.
Sesko would’ve been great in the long run, but there are no better short-term options for Newcastle than Watkins right now.
The 29-year-old would be perfect for the Magpies.
The one problem Newcastle will face if they decide to sign Ollie Watkins
Ollie Watkins has been heavily linked with a move to several clubs in recent windows, but he remains a key player for Aston Villa.
Unai Emery’s side do not want to lose him in this window, and any attempt from rival clubs will be met with a very high asking price.
The Guardian have claimed that Aston Villa are still demanding £60 million for Watkins, the same figure Arsenal were quoted when they tried to sign him in January.
Newcastle definitely have the money to afford the England international, but they have to decide whether it makes sense to spend so much on a soon-to-be 30-year-old.
The fact that Watkins will offer no resale value could be a problem, but we still think Newcastle should splash the cash and get him, especially if Alexander Isak is leaving.
