Ruben Amorim told he is making the same costly mistake Erik ten Hag did after Man United lost to Tottenham

Ruben Amorim will not like getting accustomed to losing games at Manchester United after his side sustained a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur.

United’s latest loss against Tottenham was their ninth in 21 games since Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag.

While in the Premier League, Ruben Amorim has lost eight and drawn two out of 14 matches in charge of Manchester United — which is a worryingly poor record to say the least.

The Portuguese tactician’s primary struggle as Red Devils boss has been integrating his much-discussed 3-4-3 setup.

While teams take time to learn a new manager’s systemic demands, this current crop of Manchester United players look completely lost on the pitch and that was evident against Spurs.

Tottenham have beaten Manchester United thrice this season and two of their wins came against Ruben Amorim, whose side have scored three and conceded five goals in both outings.

Ruben Amorim told Man United are struggling to score goals due to 3-4-3 system after Tottenham loss

Stephen Warnock chimed in on Manchester United’s struggles against Tottenham and in his view, one way in which Amorim’s system is holding his side back is due to how difficult it looks for them to score goals.

While Ruben Amorim could argue that United look as toothless as they do offensively due to a qualitative issue in the squad, it was a concern to see the visitors fail to score against a defence as leaky as the Lilywhites’.

Stephen Warnock explained on Sky Sports News: “It really is because if you look at the way they play, because they’re sitting deep, they try and be as organised as they can within this shape but the shape is very difficult to be organised in and break out in but what you’ve now got is.”

“It’s so disjoined at the moment for Manchester United but obviously, that issue of scoring goals is there for everyone to see. I’ve spoken publicly about this before, I don’t like the system. I don’t think it works. I don’t think he has the right players to play it. They don’t have the right players to play it, he’s hell-bent on playing it.”

Stephen Warnock believes that teams find it easy to defend against Manchester United because their front three is rather narrow, which stems from Ruben Amorim’s decision to field a pair of attacking midfielders behind the striker.

“If you look at the forward three, they’re very narrow in the way that they play. Well, that’s quite easy to defend against, you can play very compact as a back four. You can be as organised as you want, everything’s going centrally. Your two wide players, probably when Amad [Diallo] doesn’t play are arguably two defenders [Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu against Tottenham]. So, are they going to beat people in one-v-one situations, are they going to take someone on? Not really, they’re going to have to play a one-two or a pass in the way that they’re going to play.”

Man United goal record under Ruben Amorim and Erik ten Hag after first 21 games

Notably, Erik ten Hag would be beaten with the same stick as his Manchester United side averaged less than two goals a game in two of his full seasons at the club.

Ruben Amorim will be hoping that as time passes, his United players start scoring goals for fun.

So far, Amorim’s Manchester United side have scored 31 goals after his first 12 games in charge while Ten Hag’s scored 35 at the same stage

It’s safe to say that the signs do not look very promising as Erik ten Hag’s United side were also suffering the same goalscoring problems despite his superior start to the job.

With Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee in poor form as well, Amorim’s job has been made even harder to fix the Red Devils’ attack.

But it is important to remember that Ruben Amorim is still early into his time in England and he needs time to turn this side’s fortunes around as a whole.
