Roy Makaay sends message to Rangers fans on Instagram, confirmed he will be Ibrox first-team coach

Rangers confirmed that Roy Makaay will join Giovanni van Bronckhorst as first-team coach – and the Dutch goalscoring hero posted on Instagram.

Van Bronckhorst, 46, gave his first press conference as Rangers manager on Monday afternoon. In the half-hour discussion, he confirmed his staff.

Rangers followed that up with confirmation on their website, that two-time Bundesloga winner Makaay will move to Ibrox as first-team coach.

Makaay, also 46, has a huge reputation – having also won La Liga with Deportivo La Coruna. He scored a whopping 102 goals in 178 Bayern games.

He has worked at Feyenoord on the coaching staff for nine years, ending with three years as manager of Feyenoord’s U21’s between 2016 and 2019.

Posting on Instagram, Makaay sent a message to Rangers fans. He stated he is excited to get to work – with the first game on Thursday evening.

With van Bronckhorst replacing Steven Gerrard, Makaay comes in to fill the loss of Michael Beale. There are two other arrivals announced, already.

Arno Phillips, another 46-year-old, joins as fitness coach. He has enormous experience, with PSV, Feyenoord, Turkey, Australia and Schalke.

Performance analyst Yori Bosschart has also come in, leaving his role with the United Arab Emirates. Another incoming coach is expected

Both van Bronckhorst and sporting director Ross Wilson said as much in the press conference – with Wilson confirming it will be from Europe.
