Roy Keane reacts as Tottenham pipped Arsenal to top-four spot
Roy Keane has reacted on Sky Sports (broadcast on 22/5; 18:08) that Arsenal have let Tottenham off the hook after it was Antonio Conte’s men who pipped the Gunners to a top-four spot.
Spurs looked set to be in a clear pole position heading into the final day of the campaign. Tottenham went to bottom side Norwich knowing that a point would be enough to book their ticket to the Champions League.
Arsenal meanwhile, needed a victory to stand a chance of jumping back above Tottenham at the last. Unfortunately for the Gunners, their two defeats before the final day had left with a huge task.
Mikel Arteta’s men ultimately did their bit. They beat Everton comfortably at the Emirates. Of course, the Toffees had had their final during the week as they secured survival.
But Tottenham strolled across the line. Spurs won 5-0 at Norwich and will be playing in the Champions League. And Keane lauded the improvement Tottenham have made, while also criticising Arsenal for not getting the job done.
“It’s brilliant but Arsenal have let them off the hook, they’ve still lost 11 games though,” he told Sky Sports. “That’s a lot. But when you have goals in your team, they have a brilliant manager and they recruited one or two players in January just at the right time. All credit to Tottenham.”
Tottenham pipped Arsenal to top-four spot
It appeared to be imperative that Tottenham got Champions League football. Figures such as Antonio Conte and Harry Kane may be much more likely to consider their futures had they finished fifth.
It is obviously tough for Arsenal to take. But their time will come again. They are a side that is building and improving. And they will have their sights set on going one step further next year.
