Roy Hodgson once claimed that Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier was in the shadow of West Ham United midfielder Jack Wilshere – but a few years on, the Hammers reportedly want to sign Dier.
The Daily Star have claimed in Sunday’s paper edition (back page, April 12) that 26-year-old Dier is a target for West Ham this season. Indeed, the 40-time England international played under Moyes briefly at Everton as a teenager.
Dier joined Everton on loan in January 2011 and remained at Goodison Park under Moyes until the summer of 2012. However, the versatile ace never managed a senior appearance for Everton, and returned to Sporting Lisbon.
Eight years on, and Dier has since played 235 times for Tottenham at a senior level and has been a regular for England. Hodgson, though, claimed in 2016 that Dier was in the shadow of Wilshere ahead of Euro 2016.
“He did it against France, that’s for sure, and does it for Tottenham,” Hodgson was quoted as saying by the Standard, when asked about Dier shielding the back four. “He is still in the shadow of Jack Wilshere, who did so well for us before his injury.”
With Dier set to enter the final 12 months of his contract, he could be allowed to leave Spurs on a cut-price deal. But a specific figure is yet to be made public. Indeed. it remains to be seen if Spurs and West Ham will do business, given the rivalry.
But if West Ham are to consider a move, perhaps they should consider Hodgson’s comments about Dier and Wilshere – and question whether Dier will improve the Hammers squad, with Wilshere a better player, as per the former England boss.
