Aston Villa’s loan midfielder Ross Barkley has been discussing his excellent start to his career at Villa Park, including his excellent performance in the club’s impressive 7-2 win over Liverpool earlier this season.
Barkley has proven to be a big hit at Aston Villa since his surprise move on loan to the club from Chelsea.
As well as starring against Liverpool, Barkley scored the winning goal against Leicester City last time out and is now looking forward to facing former loan club Leeds United this weekend.
The win against Liverpool would have been doubly as exciting for Barkley, considering his former Everton roots.
But whilst he was playing in the game, the only thing on the rest of his team-mates’ minds, it seems, was going for blood.
“I couldn’t have asked for it to go any better so far,” Barkley told The Guardian. “The game against Liverpool was the perfect way to get up and running. When it was 5-2, we were all saying: ‘We can go for more goals here, they’re up for the taking.’
“It could have been a lot more but 7-2 against the champions is a statement to everyone else in the league that we’re ready to kick on this season.”
Aston Villa tore into Liverpool in that game, with Dean Smith clearly identifying a weakness in the Reds system and utilising the perfect players to expose and punish Jurgen Klopp’s men.
Barkley’s direct and punctuative style was key to that success and Aston Villa fans will love the fact the players were so keen to punish their opposition.
They will just hope that same bloodthirsty style is in full flow when Aston Villa face old rivals Leeds this weekend.
