Ronaldinho has told the Daily Mirror that Arsenal youngster Gabriel Martinelli reminds him of former teammate Ronaldo, and insisted that many in Brazil are incredibly excited about the forward’s potential.

Martinelli has caught the eye after an outstanding start to life at the Emirates. He has already scored 10 goals in all competitions.

That is the same number of goals that Thierry Henry had scored at the same stage during his first season with the Gunners.

But Ronaldinho suggested that Martinelli has evoked memories of another legendary striker during the early stages of his time in Europe.

“We as Brazilians are very excited about him and his future. It is one thing to have the talent – but another at the age of 18 to have the confidence,” he told the Mirror.

“He reminds me of Ronaldo his first season in Europe he scored 30 goals and people were thinking: ‘who is this 18 year old Brazilian kid?’”

It is huge praise for a player as great as Ronaldinho to compare Martinelli with Ronaldo, particularly as the retired forward played alongside the 43-year-old on so many occasions during his career.

Arsenal fans will be wary of piling the pressure on the youngster. He does not turn 19 until the summer and he has started just five Premier League games for the Gunners.

But the flashes of brilliance suggest that Mikel Arteta’s men certainly have a special talent on their hands.

It was his sensational run that got Arsenal back in the game during their recent 2-2 draw with Chelsea.

And that is why Arsenal deserve a lot of credit as it appears that they are ready to reward Martinelli.

The Daily Mail reported last week that the Gunners are looking to agree a new contract with the teenager, with his wages set to be trebled.

That will not stop speculation arising should Martinelli realise anything like what appears to be his full potential.

But it leaves Arsenal in a strong position for the coming years. So it could certainly prove to be a masterstroke.
