Everton striker Romelu Lukaku has hinted that an agreement for him to join a new club could be close, as the Belgian, currently with his national team, told Sky Sports:
“My agent knows what’s going to happen and I know as well. I’m staying calm and we have an agreement with the club as well. We stay calm and at least we have a direction where we want to go.”
Now, the Independent report that the Everton man has decided that his destination will be a return to Chelsea, rather than a potential reunion with former manager Jose Mourinho at Manchester United. The 24-year-old is said to be keen to prove a point at a club that he loves, with the aim of one day matching up to his hero Didier Drogba and the Ivorian’s achievements at Stamford Bridge.
A move to west London, rather than Manchester, could also make sense for his career. Lukaku could either line up alongside current first choice centre-forward Diego Costa, as would have been the case with the 3-5-2 formation that Antonio Conte used successfully with both Italy and Juventus, or replace him, with the The Sun claiming that the Spaniard’s future could be under threat yet again.
Lukaku recently told Belgium newspaper HLN: “The most important thing is I want to win trophies. What I would like most is to play in the Champions League and to try and win the Premier League once – or better, a few times.” Whilst that would be possible at either club, there is little doubt that Chelsea are currently in pole position to do just that.
However, it could be argued that Lukaku would have a greater opportunity at Old Trafford. With Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s future in doubt, Mourinho may have been looking to build a team around him, with a wealth of wingers and attacking midfielders on hand to provide opportunities for the Belgian that may be lacking at Chelsea, where the wingers prefer to cut inside, rather than deliver balls into the box.
That said, the decision is clearly motivated by emotion for Lukaku, if reports are to be believed. By returning to the only club where he has failed to make an impact in his career, the striker can show that the Blues made a mistake in selling him to Everton three years ago and prove himself at the very highest level at the same time.
With 26 goals to his name last season, Lukaku can be confident of making an immediate impact at Stamford Bridge and will find himself competing for a Premier League title, and in the Champions League, on a regular basis for the first time in his career – once, what is likely to be, a huge money transfer is completed.
