Leeds United’s reported hopes of signing Kouadio Kone appear to be all but over, with Fabrizio Romano tweeting that the youngster is edging closer to joining Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Whites look set to enjoy a quiet month. They have done little business in previous January windows during Marcelo Bielsa’s tenure.

But a report from Italian outlet Calciomercato towards the end of last month claimed that Leeds were battling AC Milan for Kone.

In fact, it was reported that the Premier League side had been in contact with Toulouse about a move for the 19-year-old.

However, it now appears unlikely that he will end up at Elland Road.

Romano has tonight tweeted that he is set to join the Bundesliga side. It is claimed that a bid of around £8.1 million is set to be accepted. And personal terms have been agreed.

The journalist noted that Milan had offered £4.5 million plus add-ons for Kone.

Romano’s update does not include any mention of Leeds. So perhaps the Whites did not follow up on their initial interest in the teenager.

The list of clubs linked with Kone arguably tells you a lot about his potential. The midfielder has made 17 Ligue 2 appearances this season.

Leeds, of course, have recent experience when it comes to signing players from France’s second tier. The Whites brought Illan Meslier in on loan last season and he went on to earn a permanent move.
