Romano says Tottenham target Choupo-Moting could get new deal

Fabrizio Romano has told The Here We Go Podcast that Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting will stay at Bayern Munich until the end of the season and Bayern want to extend his contract further – in comments that may alert Tottenham Hotspur.

Choupo-Moting is on the cusp of the best season of his career to date. He is already into double figures in all competitions, with five goals coming in nine appearances in the Bundesliga.

Of course, the 33-year-old is not a stranger to the Premier League. He spent one season with Stoke City.

Romano update on Tottenham target Choupo-Moting

And while he did not have the best time with the Potters, it does appear that he may be offered the chance to return to England at some stage in the coming months.

According to 90min this week, Tottenham are monitoring the Cameroonian as they look to strengthen up front. Obviously, Spurs face a difficult task whenever they try to land a striker, with Harry Kane the first name on the team sheet.

Romano was asked about Choupo-Moting’s future amid speculation linking him with Manchester United. And while he was seemingly not aware of links with Tottenham, it does appear that any admirer of the forward may be set for disappointment.

“Some rumours on Choupo-Moting because he’s doing great,” he told Here We Go. “We were in Munich for the Bayern-Inter game in the Champions League and he was absolutely fantastic. His numbers are incredible.

“But I’m told he’s staying at Bayern until the end of the season and Bayern want to extend his contract. So there will be contract talks between Choupo-Moting and Bayern.”

Spurs fans may be pleased with contract hint

Some Tottenham fans may not be too disappointed with the news on Choupo-Moting. He has been something of a figure of fun in recent years.

His goalscoring record has not previously matched up with the fact that he has played for Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern. And there was one miss in particular while at PSG which will probably haunt Choupo-Moting for the rest of his career.

He is now silencing some of his doubters at Bayern. But he will also be 34 by the end of the campaign.

Spurs may have perhaps felt that he could be a decent low-cost addition to Antonio Conte’s squad. But it would appear that he is going nowhere for now.
