Romano says Tottenham are about to open talks over Piero Hincapie

Fabrizio Romano has told the Here We Go podcast that Tottenham Hotspur are going to hold some talks this month about a potential summer deal for Piero Hincapie.

Hincapie is no stranger to the Spurs radar. He has been extremely impressive for Bayer Leverkusen this season.

Sky journalist Dharmesh Sheth told Chris Cowlin on Tuesday that Tottenham are eyeing a summer move for the 21-year-old. Spurs currently have no plans to hold onto Clement Lenglet beyond his loan spell from Barcelona.

Romano has now suggested that Tottenham will hold talks over a potential deal for Hincapie imminently in the hope of paving the way for a move at the end of the season.

“They will have some talks for Piero Hincapie, the centre-back of Bayer Leverkusen, Ecuadorian player, very good player,” he told the Here We Go podcast.

“He is also appreciated by Italian clubs. But Tottenham will have some conversations now with the idea of signing him in the summer. So Hincapie is also on Tottenham’s list.”

Hincapie’s potential appears to be somewhat frightening. He is already one of the best defenders on the ball in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

FBRef names Cristian Romero as one of the players most similar to Hincapie. And Tottenham fans would certainly be delighted that if they managed to bring him to North London and he turned out to be as influential as the Argentinian.

He will not come cheap. Previous reports from The Sun have suggested that he will cost around £34 million. And his value may well increase by the time the summer arrives.

But if he lives up to expectations, he would certainly be worth the money in the years to come.
