The search for a replacement for Steven Gerrard at Rangers is set to be ramped up, with officials at Ibrox now down to just the three names in the hat to replace the new Villa boss.

Gerrard stunned Rangers fans in midweek by taking the Aston Villa job at the first opportunity. After delivering the Scottish title back to Ibrox, the former Liverpool skipper is now returning to England.

For Rangers, then, the next step will be to ensure they get the right man in place to fill Gerrard’s shoes. And big shoes to fill they are.

According to Fabrizio Romano, though, the Gers have already taken steps to bring in Gerrard’s successor. Taking to Twitter, the respected journalist claims it is now down to just three candidates.

Van Bronckhorst has emerged as a leading contender for the job in the last few days. A former Rangers player, it is though the 46-year-old would relish the chance to go back to Ibrox.

Among the other names linked are Frank Lampard, Sean Dyche, and Alex Neil.

TBR’s View: Rangers acting quickly is the right thing to do

We saw how quickly Villa acted in replacing Dean Smith with Steven Gerrard, so it’s just as important the Gers get this right. Of course, they’ll need to take enough time to ensure the right decision is reached.

But, they also can’t allow for a Gerrard hangover to linger over the club.

Van Bronckhorst could be a smart appointment. However, the likes of Dyche and Lampard are also intriguing options, albeit even if Lampard is set for Norwich.

Rangers is a huge job for anyone. Gerrard showed it can be done well with the right attitude. Whoever comes in next, will hope to follow a similar blue print.
