Fabrizio Romano has told The Here We Go Podcast that Villarreal will hold talks about signing Giovani Lo Celso from Tottenham Hotspur, but suggested that Spurs are looking for a good fee for the midfielder this summer.

Lo Celso has been in superb form since leaving North London in January. The former Real Betis man returned to La Liga with the Yellow Submarine.

He has helped Villarreal put themselves 1-0 up after the first-leg of the Champions League quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich. He was man of the match in that first game with the Bavarian giants. They have already knocked Juventus out of the competition.

Unsurprisingly, Unai Emery’s side are looking at whether they can sign him permanently. Romano claimed that Tottenham are yet to receive an offer for Lo Celso. But he suggested that talks will take place.

He did add that Spurs will be looking for a significant fee for the Argentinian.

“Tottenham are still waiting for Villarreal to make an official proposal. From what I’m told, they want to discuss on Villarreal’s side with Tottenham to sign Lo Celso on a permanent deal or to keep the player for one more season. But Tottenham want real money so there will be a discussion this summer,” he told The Here We Go Podcast.

Giovani Lo Celso could hand Tottenham a big boost this summer

It is encouraging that Villarreal want to keep Lo Celso in the summer. He struggled to really establish himself as a key man at Tottenham. And it did appear that Antonio Conte was not entirely convinced by him.

His spell at Villarreal may leave some wondering if he could yet turn his fortunes around at Spurs. He has even been described as ‘one of the best players in the world‘. But if a good offer is made, surely Tottenham need to cash in.

They have not missed Lo Celso in the months since his departure. And they will have their plans for the summer. They need to fund them in some way.

Selling players such as the 26-year-old makes a lot of sense, particularly at a time when his stock is high.

Certainly, Villarreal are currently keen to strike a deal ahead of next season.
