Fabrizio Romano has delivered an update on William Saliba to his Arsenal following on Twitter – stating that the defender will return next summer.

Saliba, 20, is currently on loan at Marseille for the entire 2021-22 campaign – under the guidance of manager Jorge Sampaoli. It has been tricky, so far.

The France youth international, a £27million signing from St. Etienne in the summer of 2019, has started and finished nine of Marseille’s 10 games.

However, his form has been tricky. Last weekend, during a 2-0 defeat to Ligue 1 champions Lille, Saliba was given 4/10 for his display by GFFN.

Marseille themselves are not in the best of form, losing their last two league games. But Romano says Arsenal have been impressed by Saliba so far.

The Italian journalist claims that there are no doubts regarding Saliba’s future, and that Arsenal have told the defender they trust him “100%”.

Romano on Saliba: Does Frenchman get into Arsenal side?

If he does, who goes? Well, Ben White and Gabriel are first choice with Mikel Arteta keen on using a back four. Saliba would be first reserve.

The Gunners currently have Pablo Mari and Rob Holding, but Holding is hardly the long-term answer. Mari has been rather injury prone.

Selling one of those two and bringing Saliba in will give Arteta four very solid centre-backs to choose from, going into the 2022-23 campaign.

For Saliba, he needs to continue playing for Marseille – starting games and getting crucial experience under his belt, ready to shine for Arsenal.
