West Ham United and Newcastle United were both linked with Darwin Nunez in the January transfer window.

90Min claimed that intermediaries acting on behalf of the Magpies were talking to Benfica about the striker.

Meanwhile, the Hammers reportedly made a bid for Nunez, which his club rejected.

Neither West Ham nor Newcastle were able to land the talented Uruguayan this season.

But now, the Magpies are reportedly planning a summer swoop for the 22-year-old Uruguayan.

According to The Mirror, Newcastle are targeting Nunez as well as Lille’s Sven Botman.

Fabrizio Romano has now shared an update on West Ham’s failed attempt to sign the forward.

Although he didn’t suggest the Hammers were planning a summer move, he says ‘many clubs are already keeping tabs on him’.

Nunez will be ‘one of the key names’ in the summer transfer window, added Romano.

Can West Ham and Newcastle land “world-class” striker in summer 2022?

Nunez is a top talent who’d be a coup for both West Ham and Newcastle.

He became Benfica’s club-record signing in 2020 when the Portuguese outfit spent £20.5million (Goal.com) to land his signature.

Nunez previously shone at Almeria, scoring 16 goals and claiming two assists from 30 Spanish second-tier games.

And prior to that, the 6ft 2in striker came through the ranks at Penarol and won the Uruguayan league title in 2018.

Admittedly, Nunez struggled a little in his maiden season in Portugal amid injury and illness issues.

He got 14 goals from 44 appearances, including nine in the Primeira Liga.

However, Nunez did also register 12 assists in all competitions.

Now, the Uruguay international is now on top form once again.

He has a staggering 20 goals and two assists from 25 club games this term.

This includes three goals from six Champions League appearances.

“He will be a world-class player,” Goal.com quotes Jorge Jesus as saying in October 2020. “Unfortunately for me, maybe I will lose him in a short time.”

A powerhouse with a powerful right foot, “menacingly incalculable” movement and killer instincts on the pitch, he’s a star in the making.
