Romano claims 'superb' player has jumped at chance to join Arsenal, medical Friday morning

Arsenal appear to be closing in on the signing of Porto star Fabio Vieira.

On Thursday, things developed quickly between the Gunners, the Dragons and the midfielder.

At 3:46pm BST, Fabrizio Romano reported that “advanced talks were “in progress” between Arsenal and Porto.

A few minutes later, the transfer insider provided a further update.

Arsenal had reportedly submitted their final proposal for Vieira – €35m (£30m) guaranteed plus add-ons.

And just after 4:30pm, Romano said “here we go” on Vieira to Porto, saying they’d reached full agreement.

Personal terms were reportedly completed too, with the 22-year-old set to pen a contract until 2027.

Now, the latest update from Romano shows just how fast the situation is developing.

Apparently, Vieira and his agents are in London tonight ahead of a medical tomorrow morning.

“Vieira’s understood to have accepted Arsenal proposal immediately, more than happy for this chance,” added Romano.

“Arsenal are now preparing paperworks.”

Vieira is an incredibly talented player who Liverpool and Tottenham have reportedly checked out in recent months.

He already has 76 competitive appearances for Porto, registering 10 goals and 18 assists.

Indeed, 14 of those assists came in the 2021-22 Primeira Liga as he helped his side to the title.

“Similarities to Mesut Ozil”

On Thursday, scouting website Breaking the Lines provided an in-depth analysis of Vieira.

“Fabio Vieira is a classic 10,” they wrote. “But has often played on the flanks for Porto, often playing alongside the midfield double pivot of Vitinha and Matheus Uribe with Otávio on the other flank.

Capable of doing damage from dead-ball situations or winning free-kicks in dangerous areas, his low, ‘bounce passes’ have harkened similarities to Mesut Ozil at times.

“He is a player who can also threaten the goalkeeper from long distance, who excels at receiving the ball from deep and threading it forward with line-breaking through balls, a player who makes his teammates better.

“The 22-year-old is skilled at linking up with fellow forwards and midfielders with quick lay-off passes and one-twos, a player who knows how to keep possession moving but who is also capable of pulling the trigger and breaking down deep blocks with one incisive pass.

“He is a superb passer of the ball, and whether it is long or short passes, he’ll find his man. Blending speed, close control and excellent technical ability, he’s a tough player to stop in full flight.

“Aside from his passing abilities and vision of the game, he has a great dribbling ability and is capable of holding onto the ball amid pressure, creating key passes, firing dangerous set-pieces or finding inch-perfect through balls and creating a goal out of nothing.

“With that said, he hasn’t shied away from the defensive side of the game and has certainly improved in that aspect this season.”
