Leicester City are confident of landing their first-choice midfield target Boubakary Soumare in the summer transfer window.

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the Midlands outfit are optimistic they can complete the signing of the ace from Ligue 1 outfit Lille over the next few weeks.

Brendan Rodgers’ men have faced injury issues in the centre of the park this season with Nampalys Mendy and Wilfried Ndidi swapping between one another. The latter has faced two seperate issues including a long-term torn abductor muscle which kept the Nigerian out for 15 games.

Speaking about the outfit’s chase of the France youth international on his transfer podcast, Romano said: “Soumare is the main target for the Leicester midfield and it is getting closer. They are optimistic to sign Soumare in the next [few] weeks from Lille. Let’s see for the final fee, but they are progressing in talks.”

With Ndidi’s progression from relatively decent midfielder to one of the Premier League’s best, he has quite obviously earnt links to other clubs in the top-flight.

Whilst he is unlikely to leave the Champions League-chasing Foxes for a team outside the competition, it’s difficult to rule out a potential move to one of the traditional ‘big six’. Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal have all been linked with the African and a move for Soumare could help ease the potential loss of the 24-year-old.

Meanwhile, whilst Mendy proved a solid replacement during the Nigeria international’s long absence earlier in the campaign, there proves no comparison with Soumare, who comes out on top.

The Frenchman averages a higher number of long balls per game than all Leicester midfielder bar Youri Tielemans.

His influential passing mixed with his towering figure makes him a monstrous figure in the middle of the park, and one that can help Rodgers’ men thrive amongst the Elite of European football.
