Romano claims Everton contacted Zeki Celik’s agent in past weeks

Fabrizio Romano has reported on Twitter that Everton reached out to Zeki Celik’s agent in recent times with the right-back now in talks to join Roma.

The Turkey international has been hugely impressive since arriving at Lille in 2018. This season, he has scored once and provided one assist in 13 Ligue 1 games.

And it appears that he could now be on the move this month. According to Romano, the 23-year-old’s agent is now in talks with Roma.

But the Giallorrosi are, unsurprisingly, not the only side to show an interest. Romano adds that the Toffees had contacted his representatives.

He notes it was weeks ago. So that is perhaps a hint that Carlo Ancelotti is no longer interested in bringing Zelik to Goodison Park during this window.

TBR View: Everton wise to target right-back

On paper, it may not appear that Everton need a new right-back. Ancelotti has used four different options in that position so far this season.

And of course, Seamus Coleman has been one of the league’s best for a number of years. Meanwhile, Mason Holgate has been hugely impressive when deployed in that role this term.

However, Coleman is now 32. Holgate’s best position is arguably at the heart of the defence. And unfortunately, Jonjoe Kenny looks to not really be in Ancelotti’s plans.

So it makes sense to look elsewhere – even if Celik is seemingly not going to be the player who fills the void.
