Roma are seemingly desperate to keep hold of Chris Smalling beyond the summer, despite the likes of Everton and Tottenham being interested in the defender.
Smalling has been in brilliant form for the Rome giants since securing a loan move from Manchester United last summer.
After falling down the pecking order at Old Trafford, the former Fulham man has seemingly re-established himself as one of Europe’s better central defenders.
And speaking to ESPN, Roma manager, Paulo Fonseca, admitted he will do everything he can to keep hold of Smalling.
“I will do everything I can to keep him at Roma next year too. I know he wants to stay, let’s see what happens,” Fonseca said.
“He’s an amazing man, so humble, so professional. He is adored by the fans and established himself as one of the leaders in the dressing room”.
Smalling has played 21 times in Serie A this season. And while they are over 20 points off the top, a top-four finish remains very much in sight if and when the season continues.
Everton have been credited with making a move for Smalling this summer. Tottenham, too, have also been touted as a potential destination for the England man.

It’s fair to say a few eyebrows were raised when Smalling opted to make the move to Serie A. Having struggled at United, there were some who believed Smalling’s best days might be behind him.
But credit has to be given to the defender. He’s stepped up to the plate and is clearly an impressive individual.
Praise from your manager doesn’t often come easily. For Fonseca to single him out with such kind words shows the impact Smalling has had in Rome.
Everton, then, would be getting a top character and player if they can land him.
