‘Rolls-Royce’: Willock and Guimaraes were so impressed with £35m Newcastle United player on Sunday

Newcastle United once again proved their top six credentials yesterday with a dogged 0-0 draw against Manchester United.

Eddie Howe’s side kept a clean sheet at Old Trafford for the first time since 2015.

One of the players responsible for keeping Man United at bay was Sven Botman, who was really impressive yesterday.

The £35m Newcastle defender started his third match on the bounce, after back-to-back wins against Fulham and Brentford.

Botman has yet to lose a match while playing for Newcastle, and Howe will be hoping that run continues for as long as possible.

The Athletic reported earlier in the season that Howe wanted to ease Botman into the team slowly, and was already playing more than expected.

However, he’ll be glad that Botman is already starring for the first team, and was in impressive form yesterday.

The Dutch centre-back took to Instagram after the match to celebrate his team’s performance at Old Trafford.

Botman used the caption: “Great point at Old Trafford achieved with a big team effort. Thank you once again fans, see you Wednesday.”

His Newcastle teammates were full of praise the 22-year-old, with Bruno Guimaraes simply saying, “Craque”, which is Portuguese for ‘ace’.

Joe Willock called Botman a “Rolls-Royce Cullinan”, while Jacob Murphy simply said that, “Football is too easy for you”.

Newcastle have been particularly difficult to beat this season, having only lost once in all competitions.

Avoiding defeat against Manchester City earlier in the season shows how far Newcastle have progressed under Howe.

Botman has yet to make a senior appearance for the Netherlands, but will be hoping his recent form could convince Louis van Gaal to take a chance on him at the World Cup.

Botman’s impressive performance yesterday against Van Gaal’s former side certainly wouldn’t have done his hopes any harm.

Newcastle host Everton in midweek, and Botman will be keen to keep his unbeaten run going.
