Role reversal will see Christian Eriksen attempt to lure Jan Vertonghen from Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur look set to say goodbye to Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen in the summer. The 32-year-old is out of contract in June and there have been few signs that Tottenham are willing to offer him a suitable extension.

Plenty of clubs have been linked with the player but it appears that Inter Milan are now the frontrunners.

The Nerazzurri, as reported by the Daily Mail, are leading the chase for Vertonghen with Antonio Conte a big fan.

Now, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, as reported by SempreInter, a former Tottenham player is trying to lure him to the San Siro.

Christian Eriksen, who joined Inter in a reported (BBC) £17 million deal in January, is said to be trying to convince Vertonghen into an Inter move, along with his Belgian international team-mate Romelu Lukaku.

Which is something of a role reversal. Back in 2013, Tottenham wanted to snap up Christian Eriksen from Ajax. But they were not alone. Plenty of clubs were keen on the Danish star, including Premier League rivals Liverpool.

Fortunately, they had Vertonghen on hand to help. As he told the Express in 2014, Eriksen’s former Ajax team-mate felt he played a role in helping to convince Eriksen into a reported (Daily Mail) £11.5 million move to North London.

“We had good contact when he was still at Ajax and we always kept in touch.

“They (Tottenham) obviously asked me what I thought of him and I was very positive, and I think I did my job to convince him to come here.”

Now, seven years down the line, the roles are reversed and Eriksen is seemingly trying to lure Vertonghen away from Tottenham.

With no contract talks appearing to be on the horizon, it seems Eriksen and Vertonghen might be reunited yet again at a third club.
