Rodgers draws up multi-million summer shopping list
If recent reports are to be believed, Brendan Rodgers is set to act quickly in this summer’s transfer window, honing his sights on four initial players to kick-start Liverpool’s recruiting programme.
The Northern Irishman has been promised significant funds to invest in his current squad, as the side look to continue their progression after an unbelievable campaign, and he has highlighted four names that he wishes to pursue.
The club are set to register their interest in Southampton’s Adam Lallana with an official bid. They are hopeful a bid of around £20 million will act as a catalyst to the 25-year-old demanding a transfer from St Mary’s.
Rodgers is also set to target Torino’s Alessio Cerci, who has had a standout campaign for the Italian outfit. The 26-year-old wide-man has scored 13 goals in 33 Serie A starts, he is also third in the top tier’s assist rankings.
Barcelona’s Javi Mascherano will perhaps be the surprise name in this quartet. With the Catalan giants looking to offload a number of first team players as part of a squad overhaul, Rodgers will make his interest in re-signing the former Red. The 29-year-old Argentine remains a fan favourite at Liverpool it’s more than likely he could be tempted by a return to Anfield.
Swansea’s Ashley Williams completes the list. Having worked with the Welsh captain at his former club, Rodgers knows exactly what he has to offer. A £8m bid for the club’s long-term target could be in the offing.
These movements would certainly signal a step in the right direction for the Merseyside club. The squad needs improvements if Rodgers wishes to challenge for Premier League glory next campaign and a summer of spending is in order.
Adam Lallana is the only questionable target in my eyes. With Philippe Coutinho on the club’s roster, can Liverpool really warrant an expenditure of £20 million, or more, on a player who will likely be rotated with the young Brazilian?
Nonetheless, Mascherano would be a fantastic coup. The Argentine international would add much-needed bite to the Reds’ midfield, especially considering Lucas’ long-standing injury troubles. At £16 million, the tough tackler will not come cheap, but his arrival could have a huge impact on the club.
The addition of a new central defender would also be considered a positive move. Ashley Williams has proven himself as a quality Premier League player and Rodgers will be hoping he can continue this form in a Liverpool shirt. With the future of Daniel Agger unknown, the Welshman could serve as a direct replacement.
Finally, Torino’s Cerci would be a risky signing, considering how difficult the transition from Italian to English football has proven to be. However, Rodgers is an excellent man-to-man manager and he knows exactly how to get the best from his players. Iago Aspas aside, it’s difficult to pinpoint a player who hasn’t improved during his reign at Anfield.
Of course, Cerci’s form this season speaks for itself, it is just the £18 million price-tag that could be cause for concern.
