Robertson says Champions League final loss has motivated Liverpool this season

Liverpool stand just a handful of matches away from a potential Champions League and Premier League double this season.

Barcelona and Manchester City stand in their way at present, but there’s no doubt that the Reds have come a mighty long way since last season.

And even then, they were hugely impressive, rampaging into the final of the Champions League where they were beaten 3-1 by Real Madrid, in a game that will be remembered for Loris Karius’ brace of blunders and Gareth Bale’s wonder strike.

But that team thrived on chaos, but this term’s team is far more defensively sound and Andy Robertson has been a huge part of that, going from strength to strength and deservedly being named in the PFA Team of the Season.

And as per the Sunday People, 28/04, page 54, Robertson has said that defeat to Madrid has inspired Liverpool to kick on to another level this season.

He said: “We’ve used what happened in Kiev as our motivation this whole season. A lot of teams would have crumbled or let that disappointment lead to a disappointing season, but we just used it as motivation to go again.”

It was important for Liverpool that last season’s loss to Real wasn’t as good as it would get for them under Klopp because it did have the feeling of a huge opportunity being blown at the time.

But the German has gone on to shape a more rounded side who have kept pace with Manchester City and as Robertson points out, instilled enough mental fortitude to withstand that tough night in Kiev and come back stronger.
