Everton are in the hunt for Belgian attacker Leandro Trossard. As reported by the Sunday Express (05/05, Sport pullout, p7), Everton are growing increasingly confident that they will win the race for the £25m-rated winger. Arsenal are one of several other teams keen on the player but Everton are now said to be in pole position for the Genk captain.

Trossard has had a great season, scoring 22 goals in 44 games as well as providing 10 assists in Belgium. Such form even saw him earn his first call-up for Belgium.

That means he is clearly highly-rated by one former Everton manager. Roberto Martinez is currently the manager of the Belgian national team.

He initially called the winger up in September last year and again in October, but injury stopped him making a debut. He was in the latest Red Devils squad but was an unused substitute.

“Leandro Trossard is doing a great job. The situations where he runs into a defender one-on-one, I think he’ll fit very well into our system.

“He can play left and right, or as one of two number tens.”

Martinez, who managed Everton from 2013 to 2016, has however had some positive things to say about the wideman.

Earning a cap on the wing for Belgium is going to be difficult for the player. With the likes of Eden Hazard, Thorgan Hazard, Dries Mertens, Adnan Januzaj and Yannick Carrasco for competition it is easy to see why.

“They (the new Belgium call-ups) were awesome.

“They worked hard and earned the right to be part of this group. They made a good impression on me.”

But Trossard is now in esteemed company and Everton could be getting their hands on a potential future star if Trossard is snapped up.
