Former Premier League manager Roberto Martinez has appeared to suggest he was contacted by Arsenal after they parted ways with Unai Emery in November.

The Spaniard was giving an interview with Telefoot when he was asked about the Gunners and whether there had been an approach.

The former , Swansea City, Wigan Athletic and Everton boss confirmed it is his desire to continue as the manager of Belgium after this summer’s European Championships.

Martinez delivered a two-word response when quizzed about Arsenal, saying ‘I pass’ accompanied with a wry smile.

In the end of course, Arsenal opted for another Spaniard to succeed Emery in Mikel Arteta, who has experienced a tricky start at the Emirates Stadium.

The club’s former captain has won just three of his nine games in charge so far, with only one of those victories coming in the Premier League.

Arteta may not have made the best of starts results-wise at Arsenal, but there was been some progress in terms of performance.

He’s going to need a few transfer windows in order to get the squad up to scratch and patience from the supporters.

He was a gamble, but Martinez would have been just as much of a risk.

He may have won an FA Cup and took a nation to the semi-finals of a World Cup, but his time at Everton was very underwhelming, and he was responsible for two 11th place finishes.

Arsenal are poor defensively right now, and Martinez oversaw the Toffees’ worst home season in the history of the club.
