Roberto Firmino needs solid outing against Everton as Minamino lies in wait

Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino is arguably yet to hit the ground running for the Reds this season.

Mo Salah has arguably been Liverpool’s best player so far, and Sadio Mane has also made a really strong start.

Their form makes Firmino look the weakest part of the trio, although Jurgen Klopp’s feelings about the 29-year-old are well known.

The manager has always backed the South American to the hilt when he isn’t scoring, but one does wonder how much longer the manager can continue to overlook the lack of goals.

Especially now that there is a player on Liverpool’s bench who could well provide just that.

Takumi Minamino (who cost a reported £7.25 million in January, BBC Sport) has taken some time to settle at the club, but he’s looked lively coming off the bench in 2020/21.

The Japan international is yet to bag in the league, but did score in the Community Shield and notched a further two against Lincoln City in the EFL Cup.

TBR’s View – Firmino position in jeopardy?

Klopp has always trusted Firmino but one does wonder if a couple more ineffective performances and results will force the manager to consider dropping the star in favour of Minamino, who probably does deserve a run in the team and can play the false nine role.

It’s much easier to keep a player in a team when it is winning, but if Liverpool lose to Everton on Saturday and Firmino plays poorly, questions will need to be asked.

The £180,000-a-week star (Spotrac) is absolutely a fan favourite but that doesn’t mean he should get a free pass into the side if he’s below par, especially when there is another good player itching for a chance.
