A Liverpool romp towards a first Premier League title, a number of players, including Roberto Firmino, are putting in superb performances week in, week out.

The Reds are looking on course to break all the records. Unbeaten in 25 Premier League games and looking better with each passing week, Jurgen Klopp’s men seem unstoppable.

The likes of Jordan Henderson, Mo Salah, and once again, Virgil van Dijk, are getting bags of praise.

However, it is the performances of the aforementioned Firmino what should be being recognised more and more.

Once again yesterday, Firmino was in irresistible form. A hat-trick of assists helping the Reds to another rampant win over Southampton at Anfield.

Firmino can, at times, go under-appreciated. With Salah and Mane being so explosive in their performances, sometimes the Brazilian is overlooked.

However, this should be no more. In fact, Firmino should be the main man in the conversation when it comes to the PFA Player of the Year award.

A masterclass in forward play

There aren’t too many strikers in world football who play like Roberto Firmino. He plays the game with intelligence that few possess. For him, it’s not always about scoring goals. It’s about being in the right place to help the team, make the right pass, or even open up a space.

We saw this on display against the Saints. Firmino’s movement and choice of pass were on point for all three of his assists.

It’s that decision making that separates the very best. The ability to make the right call in split-second situations. Not many players have it. Firmino, though, certainly does.

Firmino has contributed ten goals and 12 assists in all competitions this season. Those stats alone, highlight just how important he is to the Reds.

The trophy will remain at Anfield

Regardless of whether Firmino does win the PFA award, the trophy will remain at Liverpool.

Virgil van Dijk is the current holder. It’s not too unreasonable to suggest that the Dutchman will retain his crown.

But in a time when watching Liverpool is such a delight for Reds fans and any neutral, it should be pointed out just how important Firmino is to the cause.

Without Firmino, Salah and Mane do not get the goals they get. If he does pick up the award and join the likes of Van Dijk, Suarez, and Steven Gerrard as winners, then it will more than richly deserved.
