Robbie Savage has told BT Sport that Illan Meslier’s display for Leeds United on Sunday afternoon during a 1-0 win over Sheffield United was one of the best performances he has seen from a young goalkeeper of late.
Meslier, 20, has established himself as first choice at Elland Road after initially joining the Whites as back-up to Kiko Casilla on loan from Lorient last season. Since then, he has signed a permanent deal, and overtaken Spain international Casilla.
It was just his 14th appearance at senior level for Leeds on Sunday, and only the 44th first-team appearance of his career. he had conceded seven goals in his first two Premier League games, but Meslier was in inspired form – as Leeds won 1-0.
A close affair saw Chris Wilder’s side have as many chances as Leeds, and nullify Marcelo Bielsa’s attack. Meslier produced one of the saves of the season so far, stopping John Lundstram’s low effort – and Savage has heaped praise on him.
“Seven clean sheets in 10 appearances towards the end of last season, helping Leeds clinch the title,” Savage said. “His performance today was one of the best I’ve seen form a young goalkeeper for a long time.
“Two world-class saves have seen Leeds pick up three points. Lundstram should open his body up and go for the other corner, he has it back where it comes from – Meslier has read it.”
TBR’s view – £5million is a bargain for Meslier
Meslier was signed permanently at the bargain fee of £5million (Telegraph) from Lorient in the summer – and that fee was already considered a bargain before the Whites embarked on their Premier League campaign.
Already, Meslier’s resale value is showing enormous profit. The Whites have landed themselves a gem in Meslier, and director of football Victor Orta deserves enormous credit for finding the France Under-20 international.
