Manchester United were battered by Manchester City on Sunday.
Despite taking a 1-0 lead into half-time, this game was as one-sided as can be with the Red Devils dealing with wave after wave of Man City pressure throughout the game.
Erik Ten Hag’s side really didn’t look like they went to the Etihad looking to win, and after such a humbling defeat, an inquest has begun.
Speaking on BBC 606, Robbie Savage has been discussing United’s problems at the moment, and while he says that Jonny Evans did well on the day, he made the point that United will never win a league title with Evans in their starting XI on a regular basis.

Man Utd can never win the league with Jonny Evans
Savage spoke about the 35-year-old.
“I’m no expert on Man United, but what I will say, Man United with Jonny Evans, he did do well for 65 or 70 minutes, but if United have aspirations of challenging for league titles I don’t think the answer is Jonny Evans. That’s an area of the pitch they will look at at centre-half. When Kambwala came on, after that United had 15% possession and it did unsettle them. Evans has been a wonderful player, but I don’t think having Evans at the heart of your defence now if you’re trying to win the Premier League isn’t the answer,” Savage said.
Ridiculous
Evans has had a fantastic career, and we do really like him as a player, but the fact that he’s starting games like this in 2024 is ridiculous.
Evans came into the summer training with United just to keep his fitness up a bit, but now, he’s starting in big games as the Red Devils look to keep their season on track – that shouldn’t, and doesn’t, add up.
Evans has had a wonderful career, but at his age, he’s not the type of defender who will take you anywhere, and United desperately need to work on fleshing out their defensive depth options this summer.
