Robbie Savage offers Tottenham hope in pursuit of Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers

Robbie Savage has told TeamTalk that he believes Tottenham Hotspur that they have a chance of nabbing Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers this summer – but only if the Foxes fail to qualify for Champions League football.

Leicester’s 4-2 defeat to Newcastle United last Friday has revamped the nerves among Leicester supporters, and the nightmares of last season that saw Leicester sit in the top four – only to tail off towards the end of the season. They are currently fourth.

With three games to play, they are five clear of West Ham – who to the delight of Leicester fans, were beaten by Everton on Sunday. Rodgers, meanwhile, continues to be linked with Tottenham as Daniel Levy searches for Jose Mourinho’s replacement.

Asked if Rodgers could leave his old side, Savage agreed that if Leicester failed to get into the top four – then Rodgers could be tempted by Tottenham, given that Liverpool, both Manchester clubs and Chelsea will not be looking for a new manager.

“I’ve had the argument with a few people. Why you would leave Leicester City to manage Spurs, but I can see why Brendan would do that,” Savage told TeamTalk. “If Leicester don’t qualify for the Champions League and win the FA Cup?

“Brendan might think it’s the right time to move on. Could he do any better than that next season? Liverpool will improve, Manchester clubs will strengthen again, expect Chelsea sign big players and Leicester can’t compete with them financially.

“It’s not inconceivable that Brendan would look at the Tottenham job and think it could be the next step for him. He will stay at Leicester if they are in the Champions League, but what big job will come up in the next year that Rodgers might get?

“He won’t get Liverpool again, the Manchester clubs are out, Thomas Tuchel is doing well at Chelsea, so you are looking at Spurs and Arsenal. Brendan Rodgers is good enough to manage any club in world football,” Savage added. “He is that good.”

TBR’s view – Can Tottenham really convince Rodgers?

Right now, Leicester are far the better side. Put the two starting line-ups next to eachother, and you could argue maybe that Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Hugo Lloris get in the Leicester side – and the latter is very questionable.

But in terms of club stature, Tottenham are much bigger than Leicester and all they need is a bit of backing, a trophy and to keep Harry Kane to remind the Premier League that they are a force to be reckoned with. Rodgers might fancy a bit of that.

One thing that will play in Leicester’s favour is firstly his enormous £192,000-a-week wages (Sun), and that he will cost enormous compensation to move him away from the King Power.
