Robbie Keane praises Harry Winks for improved Tottenham performance

Tottenham came from behind to beat Leeds United this afternoon and former striker, Robbie Keane, was full of praise for Harry Winks following the game.

Winks was handed a surprise start in the midfield alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. The Englishman was given the nod over the likes of Dele Alli and Tanguy Ndombele, and produced a decent enough display in the end.

Like so many Tottenham players, Winks did indeed struggle against a rampant looking Leeds side in the opening 45 minutes. However, in the second period, things changed for Winks and Spurs.

And former striker Keane, who was sitting in the Sky studio today, believes Winks deserves credit for improving after half-time.

“You see people like Harry Winks playing further up the park and dictating the game, whereas in the first half they got overloaded in the midfield,” Keane said.

“Second half, Hojbjerg and Winks were further forward forward. Winks especially, I thought he was very very good at driving forward with the ball.”

Winks has been linked with a move away from Tottenham this weekend as well. Newcastle United are thought to be keen on the England midfielder.

However, if he keeps doing as he did in the second 45 today, then Antonio Conte might just think twice about letting his man leave.

TBR’s View: Harry Winks makes a case but needs to do more for Tottenham

Robbie Keane is right in that Winks came to the fore in the second half a bit more but overall, he needs to offer more than he did.

Football is played over 90 minutes and in the first 45, Winks was more or less non-existent against Kalvin Phillips and Stuart Dallas.

If Winks is to salvage his career, then he needs to produce in more games and for the full 90 if he can. If not, then Conte will soon shift him out and Newcastle might be his best bet.
